Task 2Discussion EssayStructureBand 7

What is a Discussion Essay?

A Discussion essay asks you to present both sides of an argument and then give your own opinion. The question will say: "Discuss both views and give your own opinion" or "Some people think… Others believe… Discuss."

Common mistake: Many students only discuss one side, or forget to give their own opinion. Both are required for a high band score.

The Proven 4-Paragraph Structure

1

Introduction

Paraphrase the question + state your opinion (1–2 sentences)

Never copy the question word for word

2

Body Paragraph 1

Discuss View A (the first perspective) with 1–2 supporting points and an example

Use 'Those who believe X argue that…'

3

Body Paragraph 2

Discuss View B (the opposing perspective) with 1–2 supporting points and an example

Use 'On the other hand, proponents of Y contend that…'

4

Conclusion

Summarise both views + restate your opinion clearly

Never introduce new ideas in the conclusion
