Band 8 Sample Answer

Band 8 — Excellent

"The book I'd like to talk about is Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl, which I first came across about two years ago when a close friend recommended it during what was, for me, a rather difficult period personally.

It's a remarkable work — part memoir, part philosophical treatise. Frankl was a psychiatrist who survived several Nazi concentration camps, including Auschwitz, and the book describes both his experiences there and the psychological theory he developed as a result, which he called logotherapy. The central idea is that the primary human drive is not pleasure, as Freud suggested, but the search for meaning — and that even in the most extreme suffering, we retain the freedom to choose our attitude.

What I found most striking was how practical the book is, despite dealing with such harrowing subject matter. Frankl doesn't dwell on the horror for its own sake; instead, he uses it to illuminate something genuinely useful about the human condition. The idea that we can find meaning in suffering rather than being destroyed by it was something I found deeply applicable to my own life at the time.

As for recommending it — absolutely, without hesitation. I think it's one of those rare books that genuinely changes how you think, regardless of your background or circumstances."

Examiner Commentary: Excellent fluency with natural hesitation patterns. Wide vocabulary range ('treatise', 'harrowing', 'illuminate'). Complex grammar used accurately. Well-organised response covering all cue card points. Genuine personal engagement makes the answer compelling.

Band 6 Sample Answer (for comparison)

Band 6 — Competent

"I want to talk about a book called 'The Alchemist' by Paulo Coelho. I read it last year because my teacher recommended it. It's about a young boy who travels from Spain to Egypt to find treasure. Along the way he meets many interesting people and learns about following your dreams.

I found it very inspiring because the main message is that you should follow your heart and not give up. The writing style is quite simple but the story is very meaningful. I think it's a good book for young people especially.

I would definitely recommend it to others because it gives you motivation and makes you think about your own life goals."

Examiner Commentary: Covers all cue card points. Vocabulary is adequate but limited ('very inspiring', 'very meaningful'). Some repetition. Grammar is mostly accurate. Needs more complex structures and richer vocabulary for Band 7+.
